It's been a long time since I've posted. This year with the pandemic and also going to IVF treatments has made me a VERY tired teacher! Also, I was just notified that my blog designs have been disconnected...I guess it's time for me to get a blog makeover soon. Anyways, I'm so glad it's May. We have one more day of school before summer break over here in Ohio! Yesterday was my birthday and I thought a great way to celebrate with you is to share this fun and easy gift tag freebie! The Freebie is at the end of this post!

I've been working on my end-of-the-year gifts for my students and sometimes I started doing it for about a year now, adding a sticker note on the inside cover with a QR code. I started celebrating early with my kiddos today since one of my student's birthdays is tomorrow. I wanted to make sure we give her extra special attention for her special day.

This week in math, we started our measurement unit using non standard measurement tools likes cubes. Our library closes up early at the end of the year so I needed to come up with a math activity to fill out some of the specials time. I whipped up a quick worksheet for table groups to record their group's answers when they measure items in the classroom. I wish I thought of taking pictures when I did this activity today but I forgot.

Click the images below or here to get this freebie! In kindergarten, we used cubes and paperclips to measure six different items. I also included worksheets where students can add their names if you want to make this an independent activity!

It finally reached up to the 80s and the sun was out all day during school. :) The sun made my teacher heart so happy!

Do you have teacher friends working in other states? If so, send your teacher friend a friendly letter made by your students. Every time we do a pen pal letter, my students get so giddy when they see the "snail mail" from another class.

A couple years ago, when I was working at an international school in China, my kindergarteners wrote letters to one of my best friend's kindergarten class in Ohio.
Happy Tuesday! It's so cold here in Chicagoland, that I had to turn the heat back on to stay warm, haul out my winter coat (AGAIN), and wear hats and mittens at school.

This cold and windy weather is reminding me of winter and I am not liking it one bit! It's mid-May and I can't believe it's this cold still! So to remember today, I am sharing you a sample of one animal poem I have been working on.

My kinder love poems and songs. So I came up with this one during our Arctic animal unit.
In five days, I will be turning the BIG 3-0! I'm full of mixed emotions but mostly excited for the next chapter of my life!

So in honor of stepping into a new decade, I wanted to share a freebie with you each and every day of this week. It's been busy in Kindergarten with juggling the ABC countdown, doing assessments, and basically surviving the rest of the school year.

Come back to my blog each weekday to grab a freebie that is only exclusive on this blog. This will not be in my TPT shop!

I've had a lot of strong women role models in my life. My mother being one of them. My mom is the bones of my spine. She keeps me standing tall and true. She is a superhero! She beat breast cancer. She immigrated to the U.S. from Hong Kong with my dad newly married in her early twenties. She further her education with two masters degrees while pregnant and raising my sister and I. She's unstoppable and still has many dreams she wants to achieve!
Do you need a way to organize all your data by class? I've been tweaking this product for the last two years to show my student's growth with my administrators, co-teachers, and students' parents.
I like using the class tracker sheets and I highlight the student's scores to see if they performed below, at, or above grade level based on the Student Status Norms from the NWEA MAP website. Also, I put the grade level norms on the top under Fall scores, Winter scores, and Spring scores so I know what the target grade level score is for the trimester. These scores are very important to track because it is part of our teacher evaluations. Here's a closer look on what I do with the class set for the reading and math assessments.

For individual students, I like to give my 4th graders their own MAP progress sheets that they have to track on their own. There is a section on the bottom where they fill out their goals and write their actual scores. On the bar graph, I mark the NORM so they can visually see if they are on grade level.

I print out the parent letter form from the NWEA MAP website but it can be very confusing for many parents to understand all the graphs on that form so I made this supplement form to go with them so parents can see if their child is below, at, or above grade level. I also included the next steps on what their child will do at home and at school to improve their next scores.

I've been very neglectful since I got engaged back in 2014! 😳 Well, I'm back and I hope to do a future post of what has been with me in the last four years.

When it comes to summer, this is when I get a lot of my pleasure reading done! I try to mix up the genres I read. But I find myself falling back to YA novels. They are just too good to not read! Also, when I read upper elementary and middle school books, it helps me prepare for book clubs in the fall. Anyone else do this too or is it just me?

I'm hoping to do "Book Highlights" on incredible books I can find online or at your local bookstores. As a person of color, I like to look for protagonists who reflect my students.

So let's hop to it and let me show you my first Book Highlight!

If you like the gravel novel book, Smile, then you will love her newer book, Drama!

My 4th graders, especially the girls, love reading Raina Telgemeier's Smile books! They always beg be to buy more copies or ask when so-and-so is done with it. The kids cannot get their hands off of these books! So when I was online shopping on Scholastic Book Clubs, I came across Raina's other popular books and Drama stood out to me. And I knew I had to buy a copy for my class.

Drama is a charming graphic novel centered around a middle schooler named Callie. A great aspect of this book is its diverse portrayal of characters. There are several POC (people of color) as well as LGBT characters, some of which are already out and some of which are still figuring things out being doing so-- and this is the only aspect of the story where there is no drama whatsoever and it's all presented very positively! This is a quick and easy read that ALL kids should read! It's a female-positive story; however, I don't like pointing out that the protagonist of this story is STILL a white, middle class, cisgender character and everyone else are secondary characters in the main character's drama.

I didn’t know too much about Cambodia and its dark history before attending the summer service trip this year. As I prepared myself for this trip I looked up some interesting facts about Cambodia. Here are some that stuck out or surprised me.

-During the 4 year rule of the Khmer Rouge, one-fifth of Cambodia’s population was killed. They were mostly educated people, priests, and monks.

-Half of Cambodia’s current population is younger than 15 years old.

-Traditionally, birthdays are not celebrated in Cambodia. Older people might not even know their birthdays.

-The Cambodia flag is the only national flag that as an image of a building— the Angkor Wat.

-In recent times, the country’s biggest source of income has been the textile industry. The second largest source of Cambodia income is tourism.
(From travelingeast.com)

Learning more about Cambodia’s history and actually seeing the Killing Fields and S21 was a shock to me. Khmer people in Cambodia and around the world are struggling to heal the painful scars from one of the worst genocides in modern times. So many people died within the 4 year reign of the Khmer Rouge, which decimated the Cambodia population and trapping the people left in terror. With a predominantly Buddhist culture, Cambodians struggle with the understanding of hope for the future. Many have never heard of grace. They have never felt forgiveness. They were left in the dark.

As many of the students and leaders mentioned on the trip, it is difficult for us to imagine a life without hope. Even though we live in China, all of our lives have been influenced by the Western world and perspectives. Many of us grew up with money, a home, an education, and a bright future. Because of the inconceivable poverty, the Cambodians turn desperate and turn to the only resource they think they have left: their bodies and/or children. Money traps trick women and girls in prostitution, where many parents often sell their young daughters for meager sums of money. The Cambodian boys and girls are traded as commodities and used to satisfy the twisted and sick desires of others. Many of them will never be to see the amount of money we have spent to even come to Cambodia. It was hard for me to see the young street kids already working their first “job” on the streets selling souvenirs and temple relics at ages 4-teens. Whereas I didn’t get my first job until I was a teenager.

Even with this darkness glooming over the beautiful country of Cambodia, our team was able to work with some church groups and Christian NGOs to share with the Cambodian people there is a new hope through the grace and forgiveness of Jesus. We taught the at-risk street kids that every single life is precious by sharing the Gospel, singing worship songs, reciting Bible verses, and making art.

The song of the trip that basically became our theme song was “Jump Into The Light” by Jana Alayra. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cvrPkXWQIus) It is a catchy and uplifting tune with exciting hand motions that the kids of all ages loved learning in English. We sang it everywhere as a team. During classes, in the van, walking down the streets to dinner, etc. Kids would come up to us all the time singing it to us. Instead of the traditional “Hello” greeting at the door, the kids would greet us loudly with their new favorite song. The song has brought instant smiles for us as a team and for them. I’ve been teaching this song to my Kindergarteners for 2 years and I never imagined how much impact this one little song could have on me as I left Cambodia. This song will continue to give my heart an extra beat as I fond over this special memory of the worship song.

This bible verse has been stuck in my mind before, during, and after the trip.
Proverbs 31:8-9
Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves; ensure justice for those being crushed. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy.

This verse I aspire to live my life by. To be the kind of woman, wife, and mother of God I want and strive to be. Jesus loves me. He loves you. He loves the high school students and staff who went on this trip. He loves the Khmer children and people. Sharing what I know about Cambodia and its people will help educate others what is really happening in this country. I promised my newly made friends I wouldn’t forget them when I left. How could I ever forget them when I learned how many of them still love God and strive to love him deeply every day even through their hardships.

As I have been reflecting on my time in Cambodia, I was realizing WE were the LIGHT for the Christians who live and work in Cambodia every day. We were not only serving the unbelievers but the believers who dedicated their whole life to help the Cambodians who are still lost in the darkness.

(Freebie)Guo Nian Hao! aka Happy New Year! Chinese New Year is the biggest holiday celebrated in China! Many local schools take a whole month off to celebrate, visit family, or go on vacation. Because my school already had 2 weeks off for the Christmas holiday in December, we get another 2 weeks off for Chinese New Year. I love having this break! Currently I'm on my second week off from school. Last week I traveled to Chengdu, the city famous for the nation's beloved iconic animal, the Giant Panda.
Every year, my school organizes an event at our school to celebrate our host country-- China. We call it China day and set up the gymnasium with many different activities students and families can participate in. We also let the kids dress up in traditional Chinese clothes or wear red.
With a new class this year, I ran into much higher demands from my students which set me back on the world of blogging. I'll definitely need to find time to share all of the things I have been doing inside my classroom and living in China.

Over Christmas break, I went back to the US to visit my family, boyfriend, and friends. Literally as I landed in the O'Hare airport in Chicago, I saw my boyfriend and he immediately proposed to me! When I replay that night, I kept thinking to myself it's just like in the movie Love Actually. I was shocked since I thought he wouldn't propose until I came back to the states during the summer. It was an awesome surprised since we were able to spend the rest of my Christmas break celebrating our newly engagement with family and friends.

I still can't believe I'm engaged to my new fiance! I find myself staring at the new bling on my finger! The long distance is hard but we are thankful and blessed our love is stronger than ever (We've been together for over 7 years!). Because life is full of transitions, I'm now entering the zone of leaving my life in China well. When looking at the calendar, I just realized I have about 5 more months living and working in China before I head back into the US to get ready to get married to a WONDERFUL man!

It's hard to come to realization that from the moment I step onto that plane back to America, I'll always have a piece of me in China, a foot in my old life and another in my new life. This verse (Genesis 2:24) resonated with me as I'm not only leaving my family to start a new one, I'm leaving my China family and China home as well.

Earlier this week, as I was doing calendar time with my students, it dawned on me that I need to break the ice and tell my current and former students that this is my last year at Tianjin International School. That I won't be able to see them next year. Even though it is not the first time I had to say good-bye to a school, students, or teacher friends, it is still painful and sad to say goodbye.

All the time we make decisions, big ones and small ones. As I'm getting used to my new BIG decision on leaving my China life and entering a new life of marriage, it's always tough to say goodbye to what was comfortable to me.

Dr. Stephanie Cox, a practicing family doctor in Des Moines, Iowa, USA. She wrote this fantastic, rhyming book on what children will expect while visiting their doctor. This book is called My Doctor and Me ABC. I knew this book would be perfect for my English Language Students who can identify the familiar body parts and medical tools in the illustrations. This book is great to introducing new vocabulary and easing anxiety and fears of visiting the doctor.
I love how each letter focuses on something important a patient may encounter while talking with the doctor. Not only does the book teaches new vocabulary but also gives information and meaning to the vocabulary in simple, kid-friendly wording. For example, "A is for abdomen, better known as your tummy..."

I am so excited to use this book to share the importance of eating well and staying healthy and strong with my little kinders this year. I know my kids will enjoy the kid-friendly illustrations all year long! Even living in China, many of the students can relate going to a Chinese doctor versus their home country doctor. I, myself, never visited a local Chinese doctor, but I heard visiting them is very similar in visiting a doctor in the States. The waiting rooms can become a bit more crowded and could take up to a whole day waiting to see the doctor (even with an appointment)!

On a side note, I actually had to go to the hospital last Wednesday to the urgent care to see my doctor (he's from the US since it's an international hospital). Long story short, I got stung by a mosquito in our ECC Kindergarten garden and I had a BAD allergic reaction from the sting!

Here's my sad and HUGE bump on the lip picture.
This book is great for the littlest of readers and especially for those who are scared or have not been to the doctor's office before. I highly recommend this book! This book is available on Amazon by softcover or kindle e-book just under $10.00 (US).

Thank you Dr. Stephanie Cox for sharing this awesome book with me on the other side of the world!

PS- I did schedule my annual check-up for the year after writing this post! :)

The last day of the Meet the Teacher Linky hosted by Blog Hoppin'! Today's topic is WHAT do you love to teach?

I love to teach literacy and writing! Something about watch the little learners grow from the beginning of the year to the end excites me! I love finding new ideas and strategies to teach literacy to my kindergarteners. Teaching the little kiddos how to read reminds me what a perfect match I am for Kindergarten!

Another subject I fell in love teaching is Bible. The international school I work for is a private Christian school, where we are allowed to teach Bible classes to our students in China. Teaching Bible has definitely helped me grow in my personal relationship with the Lord and it has made me grow stronger towards Him. Also, it's amazing how He can work wonders in these precious 5 year old's hearts!

Happy Wednesday! Welcome to day 3 of Blog Hoppin's annual teacher week. I like to tell myself that I am a neat and organized person. But in reality, I am definitely a stacker in my classroom! Since I work in an international school, most of the classrooms are filled with files and STUFF from previous teachers. I think my classroom has stuff from at least 5 teachers!

Organizational Tip #1:
One organizational tip I learned from my cooperating teacher while I was a student teacher was keeping my printables organized by days of the week. I bought these magazine holders at IKEA since I wasn't sure where else to find these in China.

Click on the picture above to get the Days of the Week labels for FREE!!

I would put a clipboard in every magazine file holder so the papers on top of the clipboard represent the present week and the papers behind it represent the following week. I like this system because I can tell my TA to print multiple files for me and I use a post-it note to let her know which day of the week she can put the printables in. I also like the easy access to all of my printables for my lessons.

Organizational Tip #2:
Do you keep student work throughout the year and create an end of the year portfolio or binder? In the ECC, we are required to so I use the same IKEA magazine file holders to store and sort student work in. I also keep my students' handwriting and writing journals in it. I like this organizational system because it keeps all of the student's work together in one place and I don't have to put the paper inside the the binder right away.

Today is Tuesday! You know what that means...DAY 2 of Blog Hoppin's Teacher Week! There are some days where I think I spend more time at school than my own apartment! Living in China has it ups and downs...The expat community is A LOT smaller than the ones I came from back in the States. Not only do we work together, but we also hang out, go to church, and travel together. Sometimes I definitely feel like I'm living in a BUBBLE! But I love it and wouldn't trade my experience for the world.

This year, I kept my theme the same from last year: bright, rainbow colors, and a slight hint of owls and chevron. I feel so lucky to work with such a SPACIOUS classroom!!! I think it's every teacher's dream to have a HUGE class with a small student:teacher ratio. :)

Here's a closer classroom tour...Scroll below!
My name is Andrea Ho. This will be my 3rd year teaching Kindergarten.
I teach Kindergarten in a big city in CHINA! Yes, you heard me right, I
said China! This will be my second year teaching overseas and I LOVE
it! I teach in an international school. I am one of two Kindergarten
teachers and this year I have a total of 9 students (lucky me!).
I am from the Midwest growing up in the suburbs of Columbus, Ohio and
Chicago, Illinois. What I miss most about the US? Other than the
greenery and blue skies, I miss all the fast food and chain
restaurants. Chic-fil-a, Chipotle, Panera Bread...The list can go on FOREVER!
3.
Other than teaching, I love to dance, listen to music, do yoga, doodle
and create art. Teaching was actually my "fall back" career. When I
was in high school, I wanted to go into interior design or fashion
merchandising, plus be a ballerina.

4. I have been
dating my BF, Kevin, for almost 7 years! Our families call us the
"William and Kate of the Midwest". We met and fell in love in
college!

FaceTiming has been the core of our relationship this past year! Praise The Lord for awesome technology!

5.
I am also one of the eCoaches at my school. I focus on working with
teachers who have shared iPads in their rooms (age 3 year olds to 2nd
grade students). I love collaborating and sharing ideas with fellow
teachers on technology integration in the classroom! I'm still working
on my post about my shared iPads in kindergarten, but can't wait to
share with you my journey on them!

6. Family: My core
family lives in the US. But I have extended family in Hong Kong and
Australia. I love how close I am to my extended family on this side of
the pond. I'm ever so grateful to get to spend more time with them! It
makes up all the important family holidays I missed growing up in the
States!

7. Shoes- I love shopping for shoes! I was
actually kind of depressed when I made the decided to only bring 15
pairs of shoes to China last year. However, I am so thankful to be a
size 6 and can fit in many of the shoes made here! Anything past size 8
people have a real hard time finding a good pair of shoes.

8.
My favorite kind of work to do at school is decorating bulletin boards
and my classroom and hallway! Here's one of my favorites from last
year.

9.
I love traveling! Just within one year, I've been to 7 new cities
within China and 2 countries, plus going back to the US for Christmas!

10.
Things I love: Coffee, Chai tea, fancy pens esp. Papermate pens, all
genres of music, smiles, shopping, summertime, the beach and sun, and
creating products for my classroom. :)

Don't forget to stop by again tomorrow to check out my classroom! I CANNOT wait to show you my kindergarten classroom!
WOW...365 days have gone by so quickly! I remember arriving in Beijing and right when I stepped off the plane, the hot and humid air smacked me in the face. Then 2 minutes later, I was sweating all over! I arrived to China when all staff had to report to school, so I missed a lot of important meetings as I had to catch up with new staff things.

I've had made a lot of special memories working at my international school in Tianjin, China. It's been a whirlwind experience but I enjoyed every bit of it! Living on the other side of the world made me appreciate so many cultures and people groups, especially Chinese and Korean. I fell in love with the Chinese Nationals, the orphans, and the expatriate community. But most of all, I fell in love with teaching my diverse kids. Living and working in a new country, led to new adventures. I remember freaking out when I was able to carry a conversation with a taxi driver for the first time! (Basically how to go to fellowship correctly without showing my taxi cards.)

This year, I'm back teaching the same grade (Kindergarten) and I'm happy to work with my TA again. Today was the first official day back to school. I have lots to prepare but I can't wait to show off my classroom with you all! So as you wait....HERE's a freebie for you!

During student teaching, I received a lot of files from my cooperating teacher. One of my favorites was a writing center activity-- practicing word wall words using different writing mediums. It is called Rainbow Word Wall Words and I revamped it to the way I like for my kindergarteners. Students can look at the class's word wall and practice writing them on this activity. First the student needs to write the word in pencil, then crayon, and lastly marker. It's so simple and a fun center!

Click on the picture to grab this freebie on TpT and TN. There are two versions: the BIG version has space for 5 words at a time or a regular version with 10 spaces to write the words.
My school hosted a summer English camp for 4 local Chinese schools which brought in about 160 students eager to learn English from me and many guest teachers from the USA who flew in for the summer. The Chinese students ranged from age 5 to 13 years old!

Our theme was Roadtrip in the USA. Four teachers taught the 4 major regions of the US: Northeast, Southeast, Midwest, Southwest, and West. I taught dance with another teacher who taught music. It was so much fun! I taught these kids how to country line dance, Native American dancing, the hand jive, and many other fun dances!

One of my personal favorites is Oh, the Places You'll Go!
We read this book and discussed where in the world we would like to travel. My kids are lucky for being such world travelers at such a young age. Many came up with some unique places they wished to travel. We made a hot air balloon craft and wrote a sentence on where we wanted to visit.

Then I posted our craftivity onto our classroom door! I am obsessed with the hot air balloon I made from a book basket. The balloon part is made from tissue paper.

Here's a picture of my author study bulletin board in our reading library. This is definitely one of my favorite Dr. Seuss quotes. :)
But now I'm back to work.I can't believe it's already July! I have officially worked in China for 1 whole year! From the first day of school to Kindergarten graduation, it's crazy to think last summer I was packing my life away for China and a new job. Now I have survived my first year in a new country, new school, and new culture.

For teachers who are on their first year contract, we only have a 3 week vacation in June. Then we have the rest of the summer to learn "intensive" Chinese. Honestly, I was nervous at first because I skipped many of my Chinese classes (which were twice a week after school) during the school year. But since I don't have to teach everyday during the summer, my brain is ready to tackle more difficult Chinese language skills. My other job I chose to do for my international school is to teach dance for our Summer English Camp. I'm excited that I still get to spend some of my time with kids and potential kids who might attend my school. I'm happy to use and share my talents on making these kiddos the best dancers as possible and also to help them learn English! :)

In the mist of all this happening, my roommate and I had to move apartments. We were very happy we got to stay in the same apartment complex and building. AND on top of that we had movers to move everything for us! I felt so blessed I didn't have to do any heavy lifting. The best part was watching all of these Chinese people rushing into my house to pack and unpack (basically 1 or 2 people were assigned a room to place it up and unpack the boxes into the new house). I wish I took a picture of video of the moving process because it sure amazing on how quickly a 3 bedroom apartment could be boxed up in 1.5 hours!

What did I do on my 3 week vacation? I stayed in China and my boyfriend, Kevin, came to visit me!! I haven't done too much traveling within China so I was very happy to visit many places with him for the first time. We went to my city (Tianjin), Beijing, Xi'an, Shanghai, Hong Kong, and Macau. In Hong Kong, my boyfriend was able to meet my extended family for the first time face-to-face! :) Long distance relationships can be tough but I'm glad we are still able to travel and explore the world together even though our time is short.
Listening...Mat Kearney! (Just realized I wrote his name with 2 T's up above) I just love the sound of his voice! Listening to his tunes while planning.

Loving...Did you know this month is my birthday Month?! This year, it will be my golden birthday--meaning I'm turning 25 on May 25! :) I'm just loving the great, spring weather as my birthday is nearing.

Thinking...I've been doing a lot of thinking as my first year in China is coming to an end. The end of the year is busy, with prepping lessons, and discussing details on Kindergarten Graduation, Sports Day, and other End of the Year stuff.

Wanting...So I've always been a doodler. I doodle around my notes, my hands, napkins, and now my iPad. I've been playing around in creating my own clip art since sometimes what I envision in my mind, I can't find anywhere online. I've always used my fingers to draw and doodle but now I realized my finger cannot replace a steady pencil!! Will let you know which stylus I end up choosing!

Needing...My school has been doing a soccer league this month. I love it as it brings our community together but boy are my legs sore!! I definitely need to do more stretching pre and post our soccer games! Haha

Surprise...Who is in love with Charlotte's Clips clipart?!! I love how many of her Christian clip art are for free too!! I love her work! You must check her out on her TpT store and blog!
My mom and sister came last weekend to see in Tianjin. I was excited for them to see me work in my classroom, meet many of my colleagues, and meet my students. My kiddos were so excited to meet them face to face since we FaceTime both of them before.

Since they could only visit me for the weekend, I took them to part of the Great Wall near where I live. Since most tourists travel to Beijing to see the Great Wall, this part of the Great Wall had less people on it, which gave us more room to walk up and down and enjoy the scenery.

The part of the Great Wall we visited was VERY steep, with KNEE HIGH steps. Let's just say I got a good leg, thigh, whole body work out.

In my city, we have this popular food market place where many locals and tourists come to taste the local snacks and foods. This is also the place where my sister accidently dropped her iPhone into a China toliet AKA a Squatty Potty. Surprisingly, my sister didn't freak out on losing her iPhone in a dirty, stinky hole in the ground...I would have bawled my eyes out!!!

Don't know what a squatty potty is? It's basically a deep hole in the ground where you squat and go pee....

On May 6th-7th, Teachers Pay Teachers is having a BIG 2-day sale! I'm putting my entire store on sale for 20% off. Can't wait for it to start because I have a lot of items on my wish list I want to buy. Click on my TpT store on the right sidebar to look at my products. :)
