It's My Birthday and I have a freebie and sale for you!

I'm SO SO happy it's Friday because it is the start of my BIRTHDAY weekend (and Memorial weekend for most of you)!!!

As you may know from my old posts or browsing through my TN and TpT stores, I love to do science experiments!  So here is a new one about forces in motion.

This is a fun and easy science experiment for all ages! I have tried it from little preschoolers up to middle schoolers.  All you need are glass jars (I find using a wine glass is the easiest, but pickle jars work too) and a marble.  The prediction (hypothesis) is if you can get the marble to go up in the glass jar without touching it with your hands.

It's my birthday and I'll share a present with you!

Today is my birthday! And I love how it fell on a Friday so I can celebrate all weekend!  I am 23 today (I know, I'm still a baby compared to a lot of other fabulous bloggers out there!).  But after a LONG week of applying to teaching jobs and working, I'm taking the day off to soak up some sun!

Finding a teaching job is exhausting!  Yesterday alone, I received 7 rejection emails. :( What a sad birthday present right?! Anyways, I'm still looking.... I'm open to any state... anywhere! If you know of a school district that is hiring, please let me know!  I'm willing to go where there are jobs! Hopefully I get better luck this year. (birthday wish, maybe?)

I was contacted by EducationDegree.com and they wanted me to link up and share an article for new and aspiring teachers-- 5 Ways To Get Started in Teaching.  (click on "Job Hunt" tab)  Even though I don't have a full-time teaching career, I wanted to share for those who are in the same boat as me.  They have great tips for newbies, like me, who are looking on how to start their career.  This site helps you broaden ways to find that dream job.  There are many alternatives to teaching since the economy is still bad and lack of job opportunities everywhere before getting your dream classroom.

Tagged and a Freebie!

It's been awhile since I've posted something (things were hectic in the house!).  I've been away from the blogging world and I miss it terribly!!  This week my family and I were putting the house on sale AKA a lot of cleaning and prepping the house.  Anyways, I'm hoping to catch up on all the fun giveaways and blog posts in the next couple of days.  So while, I was cleaning my house non-stop, I was tagged twice.

1. Did you take lessons in anything as a kid? I was fortunate to take a lot of things as a kid. My parents wanted my sister and I to have a well-rounded childhood and learn many skills.  I took piano, swimming, singing lessons (children's choir), dance (all types), flute, golf, art, and horse riding.

2. What is the one book you would recommend to a new teacher? I'm technically a "new teacher" myself but the picture book my 1st graders loved during my student teaching was "The End" by David LaRochelle.

3. Who is your very favorite children's book author or illustrator? This is a hard one but I adore Laura Numeroff's books.

4. If you could only listen to one musical artist/group for the rest of your life, who would it be?  Another toughy!  Today I would choose Jack Johnson.

5. What is your favorite dessert? Ice cream

6. What is your biggest strength as a teacher? I am very flexible and adaptable to change.  I think it's because I'm a big organizing freak and over prepare myself.

7. What is your favorite piece of clothing? Do shoes count?  haha, if not then cardigans. I always layer!

9.  If someone gave you $500 for your classroom right now, what would you buy? Well I wish I could buy any classroom with $500. LOL But since I don't have one, I would imagine I would buy BOOKS, lots of picture books for my future classroom library!

10. What is your favorite vacation spot? In the US, it would be Washington, D.C. ( I love museums). Out of the country, it would be Paris (it is beautiful any time and day of the year).

These are the flowers that are slowly turning colors!  It looks the best after 24 hours.  This is what it looks like after 1 hour.

Today, I did a fun science experiment with carnations.  We were learning about plants the last two weeks.    The science experiment shows how plants drink water from the ground through their stems and up.  There are actually two experiments in this unit.  And did I mention it is all free?!  Check it out at my TpT or TN store!!  OR click on the pictures below!

Friday Freebie!

It's friday freebie time!

Yesterday I did an awesome science experiment with my after-school kids.  Did you know you can light a regular light bulb in a microwave?!  Don't believe it, watch Steve Spangler's video about it below!



Isn't that AMAZING?! I couldn't believe it and wanted to share this cool experiment with my kids! So here is a freebie of this experiment! The worksheet follows the scientific method steps.  Your kids will be amazed with the results! Surprisingly, none of my students guessed that the light bulb would light up.  Many of them said it would explode or the bulb will be forever broken.  One even thought that the water would change colors!

I asked a volunteer to take a pic of the experiment.  You can see the bulb glowing.  Throughout the 45 seconds, the light bulb was blinking on and off.  

Caution: The glass and light bulb get very hot! So I leave it in the microwave and finish the worksheet with the students before I take it out with the oven mitt.

Magic Finger Science Experiment

Happy Pi Day everyone!  Today is gorgeous outside in Ohio so we stayed outside longer and took out the colorful chalk!

Here's a fun science freebie that you can use!  It's the magic finger experiment!  This is where you sprinkle pepper in a bowl of water and you rub your finger with a soap bar.  Then you dip your finger to the surface of the water.  Watch what happens!  (The pepper moves away from the water)

Science behind this:
When you though your soapy finger to water, the surface tension of the water is lowered.  As the water flattens, the pepper that is flatting on top of the water repels to the outer edge of the bowl, like MAGIC! Click HERE or the picture for the free worksheet!

You can also do this experiment with milk and food coloring.  The food coloring will burst towards the outer edge as well when the soap touches the milk.  

Now I'm off to finish packing up two more rooms in the house!!  It's so sad to see my room and the whole house so BARE.  It's crazy to think I won't be living in my house (it's been12 years since we've moved) or even the state anymore!

So Thankful and Dental Science Egg Experiment

I'm feeling so thankful and blessed because in the past 2 weeks, my co-workers and I at the non-profit I work at were able to raise an estimate of $1,300 for our after-school program! Without the community support, we wouldn't be able to help these kids with the resources we already had.  So to celebrate, I'm taking the kids to the dollar theater tonight!!  We are going to watch Puss In Boots.  (I've never seen it, and I hope it's as good as the Shrek movies!)

February is Dental Health Month.  Last year, I did a neat science egg experiment to teach my students what drinks were good and bad for your teeth, and how to keep good dental hygiene.  The purpose of this science experiment is to show kids how certain drinks affect teeth and why brushing is important.  I called  this experiment: Stay Away Tooth Decay!

What you will need:
~ 4 hard boiled eggs
~ 4 clear plastic cups
~ Drinks: water, milk, grape juice (Welch's works best), and dark soda (Coke)
~ Toothbrushes and toothpaste (white paste works best)
~ Prediction worksheets

Tell your students and show that the white shells on the eggs are similar to the enamel on their teeth.  Ask them to identify the drinks you will be using and survey who likes to drink what.  Pour each liquid into a cup and place one egg in each cup.  Then have students predict which of the liquids are harmful to the teeth and to write their predictions on the worksheets.  They can draw what they think will happen to the eggs after being left in the liquids for a long time.  I did this on the counter by the sink and I had one table at a time come get a closer view of the cups as students filled out the worksheets.  

**I would first do this in the morning because it takes a few hours to really see a difference or wait overnight.**

**You can also try coffee, which does the same thing. But it makes me sad because I love drinking coffee!

At the end of the day, or the next day, discuss the student's predictions on what they think happened.  Which drink was "good" and "bad".  Take out the eggs (You will need paper towels!) and show the students what the egg looks like.  I wish I took pictures of the stained eggs because it's pretty gross!  Ask students if they have ideas on how to remove the stains.  Someone (hopefully) will say try brushing them.  Show the students how the stains go away as you brush the eggs with toothpaste.  Afterwards, have students write what happened to the eggs after being brushed and what they learned from the science experiment.
